Sandra Clayton has been serving as the county clerk of Lewis County for the past 9 years. Prior to becoming clerk, she served as a deputy clerk for 8 years. She is a lifelong resident of Lewis County and a graduate of Lewis County High school. She and her husband Tommy (of 28 years) have 3 children, Mallory (Rodney) McDonald, Whitely Clayton and Lucas Clayton. They have one grandchild, Clayton "Phenix" McDonald.

The county clerk is a constitutional officer and is elected by the people for a term of four years. The county clerk is the clerk of the county legislative body and maintains the official county commission minutes. The office performs many other duties including vehicle registrations (which may also include the collection of sales tax), issuance of marriage licenses, county beer licenses, collection of hotel/motel taxes, issuance of county business license and notary applications.
